What is therapy?
We provide professional psychotherapy services with a confidential, state-certified mental health therapist, licensed professional counselor, or licensed clinical social worker. Therapy experiences differ from therapist to therapist. However, in general, therapy is a professional relationship between a client and therapist designed to alleviate turmoil or distress. The goal of therapy is to promote healthy living and help clients make the most of their life.
How long will therapy take?
You can expect sessions to last about 45-50 minutes, although couple and family therapy may last longer. Depending on the situation, appointments may be set up weekly, bimonthly, or on a monthly basis.
You will be setting goals and designing a plan of treatment jointly with your counselor. You are free to discontinue counseling at any time. However, it is important to have a plan and to tell your counselor that you wish to terminate services.
If for any reason you are uncomfortable or feel your needs are not being met, we invite you to discuss these concerns with your counselor or another staff member.
What does confidentiality really mean?
Your therapist, and any staff member within this center, has a legal, ethical, and professional responsibility to abide by state and federal regulations designed to prevent disclosure of any information that could identify you, unless:
• You sign a consent to release or obtain information.
• A court order mandates the release of information.
• You commit or threaten to commit a crime which could cause harm to yourself or another individual.
If there is suspicion of physical, sexual, or extreme emotional abuse of a minor, the law mandates a report to local authorities.
In an emergency situation, medical personnel may be informed of pertinent information or qualified personnel for program evaluation and supervision.
With few exceptions, biological parents have legal access to information about their minor children unless the child specifically denies the parent access to the child's treatment record.
Do you offer virtual sessions or teletherapy?
In these challenging times, we are all working together to provide the best, safest and most effective options to our clients. Teletherapy is a wonderful option to assist clients in beginning or continuing when they are unable to attend in-person sessions, are uncomfortable doing so, or even a great way to get a session in when you are out of town! Ask our front office staff for more information on this option.
TREATMENT METHODS AND MODALITIES
our treatment methods include but are not limited to:
(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of therapy that incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy with eye movements or other forms of rhythmic, left-right brain stimulation, such as hand taps or sounds. These bilateral forms of stimulation are thought to work by “unfreezing” the brain’s information processing system, which is interrupted in times of extreme stress, leaving only frozen emotional fragments which retain their original intensity. Once these fragments of the trauma are freed they can be integrated and processed with new ones reducing or eliminating anxiety, panic, depression and anger reactions. Controlled clinical studies place EMDR between 70 and 90 percent success rates.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive-behavioral therapy stresses the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause our negative feelings. Our therapist assists the client in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting dysfunctional beliefs underlying his or her thinking. The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviors that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of disorders, including depression and anxiety.
Biofeedback is simply using signals from you own body to improve your health. If you've stepped on a scale or taken your temperature, for example, you've received "feed back" information that you then perhaps acted on. Our therapist may use computer assisted programs to help clients suffering from anxiety, ADD, stress, or tension headaches. The program picks up electrical signals in the muscles. As the client tries to relax her muscles, (gaining coherence between the heart and mind) she can get an immediate progress report by watching the speed of the signals, or achieving task during the game thus learning how to better control her mind and body.
Art Therapy & Sand Tray Work
Art therapy is a serious technique that uses the creative process to help improve the mental health of clients. Art therapy can be used on children and adults to treat a wide range of emotional issues, including anxiety, depression, family and relationship problems, abuse and domestic violence, and trauma and loss. Art therapy programs commonly found in hospitals and community centers, are based on the belief that the creative process is healing and life-enhancing. As they paint or draw, our skilled therapists use the client's works of art and her approach to the process as springboards to help her gain personal insight, improve her judgment, cope with stress, and work through traumatic experiences. Similar techniques are used in sand tray work. Therapists often use a "prompt" and the client then uses different models and figures to create their internal world. Sand tray is a widely used therapeutic technique that can be very powerful in the healing process.
Family Systems Therapy
In Family Systems therapy we attempt to identify problems within the family’s group dynamic as a possible contributor to the existing problems and not just a particular member’s behaviors. The family is seen as a complex system having its own language, roles, rules, beliefs, needs and patterns. Our therapist helps each individual member of the family understand how her childhood family operated, her role in that system, and how that experience has shaped her role in her current family.
Family and Marital therapists work with families or couples both together and individually to help them improve their communication skills, build on the positive aspects of their relationships, and repair the harmful or negative aspects. Clinicians are trained in the Gottman method and/or other evidenced based methods to assist clients in creating healing within their relationships.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectics are a skills based therapy modality that means to integrate or a "synthesis of opposites". Often clients get stuck in extreme patterns of thinking that can negatively effect their lives and levels of happiness. DBT incorporates 4 different levels of skills based work to increase mental flexibility and encourage the client to engage in healthy ways with themselves, their loved ones and the world around them. They include distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness skills.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
Solution-focused therapy, sometimes called "brief therapy," focuses on what clients would like to achieve through therapy rather than on their troubles or mental health issues. Our therapist will help the client envision a desirable future, and then map out the small and large changes necessary for the client to undergo to realize their vision. We focus on successes the client experiences, to encourage them to build on their strengths rather than dwell on their problems or limitations.
Moving Meditation and Mindfulness
Circle of Life has developed a unique method for the teaching and training of moving meditation and mindfulness. Our program includes breath work, traditional meditation, guided meditations, and movements adapted from traditional Qi Gong Tai Chi Ch'aun. Research shows that moving meditation and breath work is highly effective for the reduction of anxiety and depression, as well as being very beneficial in aiding the treatment of trauma.
Trans-personal therapy emphasizes the transcendent or spiritual aspects of a client's development which help cultivate a greater sense of connectedness with others, with nature, and with a higher spirit. Our philosophies are Christian based and non-denominational. We guide our clients' emotional, mental and spiritual growth simultaneously.
Life Skills Coaching
Life skills coaching focuses on teaching skills necessary to achieve success and happiness such as assertive communication, integrity, accountability, responsibility and goal setting. Our life coaches help individuals realize their goals in school, work, relationships and life.
